Juicing is the process of extracting the juice from fruits, vegetables, or tubers. The juice is extracted by using the juicing machines available in the market today, such as the hand juicers, centrifugal juicers, or the masticating juicers.

Benefits of Juicing


The fresh juice from juicing contains the same nutrients as the fresh fruits and vegetables but the process of juicing removes the fibers and makes the juice more concentrated, so it becomes easier to digest and to absorb into the bloodstream.

Juicing then is an effective and faster way to absorb into the body the nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, and enzymes found in fruits and vegetables.

The following are just some of the benefits of Juicing:

Juicing Recipe Tips:

  1. For your base, use veggies that are high in water, such as cucumber and celery.
  2. Add dark leafy greens, such as Romaine lettuce, kale, and spinach.
  3. Add fruits, such as green apple or pineapple to add a bit of sweetness to your green juice.
  4. Add some flavor boosters, such as ginger, mint, cilantro, and parsley.

Most Common Types of Juicers:


1. Centrifugal Juice Extractors

A centrifugal juicer is the most common type of juicer. It cuts up the fruit or vegetable with a flat cutting blade and spins the produce at a high speed in order to separate the juice from the pulp.

The juicer extracts the juice from the flesh through a centrifugal force.

The juice and pulp then take a separate route to different containers. The general idea is that the centrifugal juicers with its fast-spinning metal blades generate heat, and heat destroys some of the enzymes in the fruits and vegetables that you are juicing.

Many people say that since heat oxidizes the nutrients, centrifugal juicers produce less nutritious juice compared to a masticating juicer. But take note that I found one test wherein the result shows that centrifugal juicers do not produce enough heat to destroy the nutrients from fruits and vegetables.



2. Masticating Juicers

A masticating juicer which is also known as a slow juicer uses an auger to slowly squeeze the juice out of the fruits and vegetables. It employs the same cold press method that many high quality olive oil producers use.

An auger is a spiral-shaped tool (like a drill) that moves liquids or other materials from one point to another. Most masticating juicers use a single auger but there are brands that use dual auger.

A masticating juicer is designed to chew or masticate in order to squeeze the juice from the fruits and vegetables. Hence, it is called a masticating juicer.

It produces juice by crushing and then pressing the fruit and vegetables to get a higher juice yield. It does not produce as much heat so it keeps more of the nutrients from the fresh produce you are juicing.

The slow movement reduces the chances of oxidation which means that oxygen does not immediately damage the juice. You can even store the juice for a few hours without losing much of its nutrients.

General Result of Tests and Research:


Retention of Nutrients:

  • Centrifugal Juicer – the high-speed spinning creates some heat which may break down nutrients.
  • Masticating or Slow Juicer – does not produce enough heat to damage nutrients, thus retaining more of the nutrients from the produce.

Juicing Leafy Greens:

  • Centrifugal Juicer –  extracts less juice from leafy greens.
  • Masticating Juicer –  works better in extracting juice from leafy greens.

Processing Nuts:

  • Centrifugal Juicer – cannot process nuts
  • Masticating Juicer – great for making almond milk or cashew milk

Level of Noise when Juicing:

  • Centrifugal Juicer –  can be as loud as a blender
  • Masticating Juicer – much, much quieter than the centrifugal juicer

Pulp Produced:

  • Centrifugal Juicer – a good amount of pulp.
  • Masticating Juicer – produces more pulp than centrifugal.

Summary:


You can choose the centrifugal juicer if:

  • You need the juice for cooking or baking where you are eventually going to apply heat
  • You are not overly particular about nutrient benefits
  • You are trying to save money

You can choose the masticating juicer if:

  • You are into juicing for cleansing (detoxification), you love green juices and nut milks
  • You want to get the maximum nutritional benefits from juicing
  • You believe that your health is a good investment for your money

The Downside of a Masticating Juicer


While you can put in whole fruits and vegetables into a centrifugal juicer because of its large opening, you can’t do that in a masticating juicer because they come with a small feed opening.

You have to cut up your apples into slices, or you celery stalks into half inch sizes. But for some produce, you can do them in advance. You can dice up carrots and celery and store them before you actually juice them.

Apples and cucumbers have to be cut up on the spot – do not store them already cut up.



The Vertical Masticating Juicers


You might not like the horizontal design of a masticating juicer and you want something like the centrifugal for space or aesthetic concerns. Don’t worry because there are many vertical masticating juicers now in the market.
